What to Pack for Puerto Rico

Packing for Puerto Rico is pretty easy: think warm weather, sunshine, beaches, sudden rain showers and plenty of time outdoors.

Puerto Rico is part of the United States, so you don’t need to pack for a remote tropical destination. Pharmacies, supermarkets and major retailers are readily available in populated areas, and most everyday items can easily be purchased after you arrive.

Still, bringing a few essentials can make your trip much more comfortable.

Here’s what we recommend packing for your Puerto Rico vacation.

☀️ Sun Protection Is Essential

The Caribbean sun can be much stronger than visitors expect, even on cloudy days.

Bring a broad-spectrum sunscreen with a high SPF and remember to reapply it throughout the day, especially after swimming.

A few other useful items include:

·      Sunglasses

·      A wide-brimmed hat or baseball cap

·      Lightweight cover-up

·      Rash guard for long days in the water

·      SPF lip balm

If you’re planning several beach days, bringing more sunscreen than you think you’ll need isn’t a bad idea.

🩱 Bring More Than One Swimsuit

In Puerto Rico, there’s a good chance you’ll spend plenty of time in the water.

Between beaches, pools, waterfalls, boats and other water activities, having at least two swimsuits allows one to dry while you wear the other.

A lightweight beach cover-up is also useful when walking between the beach, restaurants and your accommodation.

👕 Pack Light, Breathable Clothing

Puerto Rico has a warm tropical climate throughout the year.

Lightweight clothing made from breathable fabrics will usually be much more comfortable than heavy clothing.

Think:

Shorts • T-shirts • Sundresses • Linen shirts • Lightweight pants • Sandals

You probably won’t need a heavy jacket.

However, indoor restaurants, stores and other businesses can sometimes feel surprisingly cold because of air conditioning. A light sweater or long-sleeve shirt can come in handy.

👟 Bring Comfortable Walking Shoes

Flip-flops are perfect for the beach, but they shouldn’t be your only footwear.

Old San Juan’s historic streets are beautiful, but its cobblestones, hills and uneven sidewalks make comfortable walking shoes a very good idea.

Consider packing:

·      Comfortable sneakers or walking shoes

·      Sandals or flip-flops

·      Water shoes if you’ll be exploring rocky beaches or rivers

·      Hiking shoes if you’re planning more adventurous trails

Your feet will thank you after a full day exploring San Juan.

🌧️ Expect a Little Rain

Puerto Rico is tropical, which means rain can appear quickly — even when the day begins with bright sunshine.

The good news is that many showers are relatively brief.

Pack a small travel umbrella or lightweight rain jacket that can easily fit into a backpack.

A waterproof or water-resistant bag for your phone, wallet and other valuables can also be useful during beach trips and outdoor adventures.

Don’t automatically cancel your plans because the forecast shows rain. Tropical forecasts frequently include the possibility of showers somewhere on the island.

🌴 Visiting El Yunque?

If you’re planning a trip to El Yunque National Forest, prepare for a wetter environment than you’ll experience around San Juan.

Consider bringing:

·      Comfortable shoes with good traction

·      Lightweight rain jacket

·      Small backpack

·      Refillable water bottle

·      Quick-drying clothing

·      Insect repellent

·      Waterproof phone pouch

Trails and rocks can become slippery after rain, so appropriate footwear is especially important.

And remember: it’s a rainforest. Getting a little wet is part of the experience.

🦟 Don’t Forget Insect Repellent

Mosquitoes are part of life in a tropical climate.

Bring an effective insect repellent, particularly if you’ll be visiting El Yunque, rural areas, mangroves or spending evenings outdoors.

Mosquito activity can increase after periods of rain.

If you’re especially sensitive to bites, lightweight long sleeves and pants can provide additional protection in the evening.

🔋 Pack a Portable Battery

A portable USB power bank is one of our favorite Puerto Rico travel items.

You’ll probably use your phone throughout the day for:

GPS • Photos • Restaurant searches • Reservations • Translation • Beach information • Ride services

All of that can drain a battery surprisingly quickly.

Puerto Rico can also experience occasional electrical outages, making a charged portable battery useful at your accommodation as well.

Charge it overnight and toss it in your day bag before heading out.

💧 Bring a Reusable Water Bottle

Staying hydrated is extremely important in Puerto Rico’s heat and humidity.

A reusable insulated water bottle is ideal for beach days, hiking, sightseeing and road trips around the island.

Fill it before heading out for the day and drink regularly — not just when you begin feeling thirsty.

🏖️ You Probably Don’t Need to Pack Beach Equipment

Before filling your suitcase with beach gear, check what your accommodation provides.

Many Puerto Rico vacation rentals provide items such as:

Beach towels • Beach chairs • Umbrellas • Coolers

If they’re included with your rental, leave yours at home and save the luggage space.

Always check your property’s amenities before packing.

💵 Bring a Little Cash

Puerto Rico uses the U.S. dollar, and credit and debit cards are accepted throughout most of the island.

Still, carrying some cash is useful.

Small businesses, roadside food stands, parking areas, beach vendors and businesses in rural communities may prefer cash or occasionally have problems processing cards.

You don’t need to carry a large amount — just enough for smaller purchases and unexpected situations.

💳 You Don’t Need to Exchange Money

For visitors coming from the mainland United States, there’s no currency exchange required.

Puerto Rico uses the U.S. dollar, and U.S. credit cards and debit cards generally work just as they do elsewhere in the United States.

ATMs are also widely available.

🔌 Leave the International Power Adapter at Home

Puerto Rico uses the same electrical outlets and voltage standards commonly used in the mainland United States.

If you’re traveling from the U.S., your normal phone chargers, laptop chargers and other electronics will plug directly into the outlets.

International visitors should check whether their devices require an adapter or voltage converter.

💊 Bring Your Medications

Bring enough prescription medication for your entire trip, preferably in its original labeled container.

It’s also useful to pack a small travel medical kit containing basics such as:

·      Pain reliever

·      Bandages

·      Motion-sickness medication

·      Antihistamine

·      Any personal medications

Pharmacies are common throughout Puerto Rico, particularly in metropolitan and tourist areas, so most everyday toiletries and over-the-counter products are easy to replace.

🤢 Planning a Boat Trip?

If you’re heading to Culebra, Vieques, Icacos or another offshore destination, consider bringing motion-sickness medication if you’re susceptible to seasickness.

Even when the weather is beautiful, ocean conditions can make ferry and boat rides bumpy.

If you’re unsure whether you get seasick, it’s usually better to be prepared.

Cellular service is generally good throughout populated areas, but coverage can become inconsistent in mountains, forests and remote areas.

Before a road trip or hike, consider downloading:

·      Offline Google Maps

·      Reservation confirmations

·      Airline information

·      Accommodation address

·      Important phone numbers

·      Tickets or QR codes

Take a screenshot of anything you absolutely need to access.

🎒 Bring a Small Day Bag

A lightweight backpack or tote bag will probably become one of your most-used items.

It’s perfect for carrying sunscreen, water, a portable charger, sunglasses, snacks, rain protection and other essentials while exploring.

For beach and boat days, a water-resistant bag is even better.

👗 Pack Something Nice for Dinner

Puerto Rico is relaxed, but that doesn’t mean everything is beachwear.

San Juan has an excellent restaurant and nightlife scene, particularly around Condado, Santurce and Old San Juan.

Pack at least one outfit suitable for a nice dinner or evening out.

You don’t necessarily need formal clothing — think comfortable tropical resort casual.

🚫 What Can You Leave at Home?

You probably don’t need:

Heavy winter clothing — Puerto Rico stays warm throughout the year.

Large quantities of toiletries — pharmacies and supermarkets are readily available.

International power adapters if you’re coming from the U.S.

Too many formal outfits — casual clothing works for most activities.

Large beach towels if your accommodation already provides them.

Too much clothing. Lightweight clothes are easy to rewear, and many vacation rentals have access to laundry facilities.

Save that suitcase space for something you’ll actually use — or for something you find while you’re here.
